What Happens When an Alternator Fails?

Your car's electrical system is needed for its engine to start and continue running, not just for the lights and electronics on the dash. The motor uses electricity to ignite fuel inside its combustion chambers, so without electricity it won't run.

That's why a properly functioning alternator is needed. The alternator generates electricity by using the engine's mechanical energy to create a constant voltage. That electrical current is used to keep the engine running and to recharge the battery. When the alternator begins to fail, you'll notice the battery's charge weaken until it's drained completely. It's easy to mistake this for a bad battery when it's actually the alternator.
