What does comprehensive auto insurance cover? Comprehensive insurance coverage is a good way to protect your car from unexpected events that are beyond your control, and just about every Kingman lender will require it if you’re financing the purchase of a new or used car. But what is comprehensive coverage? What does comprehensive insurance cover, and how does it differ from other types of car insurance? Keep reading for the answers, as we take a deep dive into comprehensive insurance coverage.

What is Comprehensive Coverage?

Comprehensive insurance coverage is an optional type of car insurance that covers damage to your car from non-collision events. In other words, it covers your car from damage that results from things other than car crashes. But what does comprehensive insurance cover, specifically?

What Does Comprehensive Insurance Cover?

Lots of Golden Valley drivers have chosen to get comprehensive insurance coverage for their automobiles because they want extra peace of mind. We have some examples of situations where comprehensive insurance would cover your car below:

Things Comprehensive Insurance Coverage Does Cover

  • Your car is stolen or broken into
  • Your car is vandalized or spray-painted
  • Your car is damaged by a fire or explosion
  • Your car is hit by a deer or other animal
  • Your car is damaged by hail, wind, flood, or earthquake
  • Your car is crushed by a falling tree or rock

Things Comprehensive Insurance Coverage Does Not Cover

  • Damage to your car from a collision with another vehicle or object
  • Damage to other people’s property
  • Bodily injury liability

How Does Comprehensive Insurance Coverage Work?

Now that you know what comprehensive insurance covers, let’s see how it works:

  1. Your car acquires covered damage from a natural disaster that causes $5,000 worth of damage to your vehicle
  2. You’ll need to file a claim in order to get coverage. This depends on your provider, but typically you can file online, by phone, or via a mobile app.
  3. You’ll take your vehicle in for repairs. If you have a $1,000 deductible, you’ll need to pay $1,000 out of pocket for that damage. Your insurance will cover the remaining $4,000 worth of damage.

Comprehensive vs. Collision Insurance

What is the difference between comprehensive coverage and collision coverage? It’s easy to mix them up. While both types of insurance cover your vehicle, they cover different scenarios:

  • Collision insurance specifically covers car accidents
  • Comprehensive insurance covers events that are outside of your control

If a given incident doesn’t have to do with an actual car accident, the damage will likely be covered by comprehensive car insurance. The one gray area is an animal collision. Depending on whether a collision is involved in the incident, this may fall under either collision or comprehensive insurance coverage.
