Ford Explorer: Specs, Engine, & MPG

2024 Ford Explorer Platinum

While the new Ford Explorer does come with some off-road capability if you opt for the Timberline® trim, it’s arguably more suited as a suburban family vehicle. That said, while it’s more at-home cruising down the streets of Golden Valley than kicking up dust on a dirt road, the Ford Explorer specs are more than sufficient for your family’s everyday needs.

Here, we’ll describe the Ford Explorer engine options available to you, and their performance on important metrics like the Ford Explorer’s mpg rating. Read on to learn more, and contact us if you have more questions or want to tour our inventory! We’d love to have you.

2024 Ford Explorer Engine Options

When it comes to selecting the heart of your Ford Explorer, you have two Ford Explorer engine options: the 2.3L EcoBoost® I-4 or the 3.0L EcoBoost® V6. Both are paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and can accommodate either a 4WD or AWD drivetrain:

2.3L EcoBoost® I-4 Engine

  • 300 hp, 310 lb-ft of torque
  • 10-speed automatic transmission
  • Maximum trailering capacity: 5,300 pounds (RWD)

3.0L EcoBoost® V6 Engine

2024 Ford Explorer MPG Rating

Wondering about how often you’ll need to fuel up while running those weekend errands in Dolan Springs? Well, we’re here to let you know that the Ford Explorer’s mpg rating is affected by two main factors: the engine and drivetrain. Your overall range, on the other hand, is also affected by trim since different Ford Explorer trims vary in their fuel tank capacity, so keep that in mind:

Ford Explorer City / Highway MPG Rating

2.3L EcoBoost® I-4 Engine

  • 21 city / 28 highway mpg (RWD)
  • 20 city / 27 highway (4WD)

3.0L EcoBoost® V6 Engine

  • 18 city / 24 highway mpg (4WD)

Ford Explorer Fuel Capacity by Trim
